How a listing gets in
Discovery is automated: a scheduled job scans GitHub and the npm registry for packages and repositories that implement MCP, and pulls in their name, description, repo link, license, and similar metadata.
Nothing from that scan goes live on its own. Every discovered item — and every listing submitted directly through the submission form — lands in a moderation queue first. An admin reviews each one and explicitly approves or rejects it before it ever appears on the site.
What review actually checks today
Being direct about this rather than overstating it: the review step confirms a listing is real and accurately described — the repository exists, the description matches what it says it does, links resolve, the metadata isn't spam or malformed. It is a legitimacy and accuracy check on every published listing, not yet a guarantee that every one has been individually installed and run end-to-end.
Hands-on testing — actually installing a server and confirming it works as described — happens too, but currently as an ongoing pass across the catalog rather than a hard gate before publishing. Closing that gap for the full catalog is real, unfinished work, not a solved problem.
What Official means
A small number of listings — official servers published directly by organizations like Microsoft, Cloudflare, AWS, HashiCorp, Atlassian, and the Model Context Protocol project itself — carry an Official badge. That badge is about provenance: it's the vendor's own repository, not a third-party reimplementation. It's a separate signal from hands-on verification, not a stronger version of it.
Everything without that badge is a community or vendor submission, reviewed the same way described above.
Where this is headed
A more formal verification system — clearer signals for what's actually been tested, staleness checks for listings that haven't been touched in a while, and similar — is a real direction, not something built yet. This page will get more precise as that work lands, rather than the claim getting ahead of the actual process.
